Under African Skies

Charlie’s collection, Under African Skies, showcases the astounding wilderness areas and iconic species of the African continent. In many ways Charlie began his career as a photographer in the wilds of Sub-Saharan Africa and the continent now also serves as the focus of his conservation work. From open plains to dense forest, wetlands to desert, Africa encompasses a vast array of spectacular ecosystems. Charlie’s ultimate goal is to capture the emotion of encounters with such fabled species as lions and mountain gorillas to better highlight their need for protection.

The Beginning of the Journey

The vision behind Under African Skies began with a desire to tell a deeper story about Africa’s wilderness. Rather than simply documenting animals, Charlie set out to capture the profound connection between wildlife, landscape, and the rhythm of the natural world.

Each expedition required careful planning, from selecting remote conservation areas to understanding seasonal migrations and animal behaviors. These journeys often led deep into regions rarely seen by travelers, where patience and respect for the environment were essential.

Life in the
African Wild

Traveling across Africa meant experiencing environments that constantly shift in mood and character. One day might begin with golden sunrise light over endless savannas, while another unfolds under stormy skies above distant mountain ranges.

These changing landscapes shape the lives of the animals that inhabit them. Capturing these moments required long hours in the field, waiting quietly for the perfect interaction — a lion surveying its territory, a herd of elephants crossing the plains, or a gorilla family moving silently through forest shadows.

Capturing the Moment

Photographing wildlife at this level requires more than technical skill — it demands patience, awareness, and an understanding of animal behavior.

Charlie works with specialized equipment designed for challenging environments, often shooting in extreme heat, low light, or unpredictable weather. Long lenses allow for intimate perspectives without disturbing wildlife, while careful composition emphasizes the beauty and power of each subject.

Every image in the collection is crafted to tell a story — not just about the animal itself, but about the environment it calls home.

The Art of Tracking

Many of the photographs in this collection were the result of days — sometimes weeks — of tracking and observation.

Guided by experienced local trackers and conservationists, Charlie followed subtle signs in the landscape: footprints in the dust, distant calls across the plains, or movement hidden within tall grasses.

These quiet moments of waiting often become the most rewarding. The patience required to witness these encounters reflects the respect necessary when working within fragile ecosystems.

From Field to
Fine Art

The final stage of the process takes place long after the expedition ends. Each image undergoes careful post-processing to ensure that the final print reflects the true atmosphere and emotion of the original moment.

Color balance, light, and contrast are refined to preserve authenticity while enhancing the dramatic qualities of the scene. The result is a collection of fine art images designed to immerse viewers in Africa’s wilderness and inspire a deeper appreciation for its wildlife.
